Strictly stars delight Chelsea pensioners at the Christams Cheese Ceremony

Shropshire Cheesemaker Belton was once again at the centre of the annual Ceremony of the Christmas Cheeses at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea in London.

Belton donated their Red Fox Cheese along with Mature White Cheshire, Traditional Red Leicester and Traditional Double Gloucester for the Chelsea Pensioners to enjoy during the festive season.

Glitz and glamour came to the Royal Hospital Chelsea when Strictly Come Dancing’s much loved dancing duo, Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag, took to the floor with sprightly Chelsea Pensioners to mark the start of the festive season.

The dancers were surprise guests for a tradition that dates back more than 300 years – the Ceremony of Christmas Cheeses.
The ceremony began in 1692, when the Royal Hospital Chelsea asked a local cheesemonger to provide the pensioners with cheese as a Christmas treat. Ever since, cheesemakers from all over the country have continued the tradition and donated a selection of cheeses to the Chelsea Pensioners.

The Dairy Council has been organising the donations for over 50 years. They are presented to the in-pensioners during a special ceremony at the Hospital.

Anton Du Beke said: “It has been an honour to come to the Royal Hospital and pay tribute to the heroes Britain hold so dear. Some of the Pensioners are still very light on their feet and were up for a spin, I’ll be doing well if I can do the same at their age!”
