Ceremony Of The Christmas Cheese

Shropshire Cheese maker Belton Cheese was once again delighted to support the annual Ceremony of the Christmas Cheese at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea in London.

Belton donated their delicious Red Fox Cheese along with Mature White Cheshire, Traditional Red Leicester and Traditional Double Gloucester for the Chelsea Pensioners to enjoy during the festive season.

Every year British cheeses are donated by cheese makers all over Great Britain and presented to the Chelsea pensioners during the annual Ceremony of the Christmas Cheeses at the Royal Hospital, London.

The tradition dates back to 1692 when the hospital asked a local cheesemonger to provide the pensioners with cheese as a Christmas treat. Cheese has been a favourite among British soldiers serving on the front line as it was handed out in their rations during the First World War.

The cheese ceremony, organised by The Dairy Council had added spice as TV’s Strictly Come Dancing stars Flavia and Vincent wowed the audience with a stunning waltz to the song Moon River.
